Our next workshop is in just under two weeks away!
Andrea Donahoe, our Vice President, is presenting!
Creating Cross Curricular Connections in the Music Classroom
Making cross curricular connections in the music classroom is an exciting opportunity for students to experience content from their general classroom in an aesthetic environment; with their mind, their bodies, and their hearts. Join us for this workshop where participants will explore inventive music lessons that are additionally connected to classroom content and support common core and 21st century learning objectives. We will also explore tips and tools for finding authentic opportunities for integration and advocacy of our work. See you on October 3!
Additionally, our featured Orff Moment will be Stations. Bring your cameras to take pictures as we participate and play, exploring station examples you can create in your own classroom!
Our first workshop for the 2015-2016 school year is right around the corner and will be a great way to start the year. On Saturday, September 12th, Paul Weller is joining us and will be presenting a session titled:
Assessment, Advocacy & Accountability: creating independent musicians through elemental music
This workshop will focus on the similarities between many different methodologies and how an Orff focused classroom can achieve literacy based concepts and foster
student independence. Participants will experience strategies to create successful improvisation and composition experiences, assessment tools to help propel students quicker towards musical independence, as well as how to use less repertoire to achieve more literacy.
All Fox Valley Orff Schulwerk Chapter Workshops meet from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Prairie View Elementary School, 10N630 Nesler Road in Elgin.
Please join us for lunch after the workshop for some face to face social networking time at Al’s Cafe and Creamery!

We will also be electing some new board members. We currently are looking for a Vice President, whose duties include planning and contracting our workshop presenters. They also help publicize all of the chapter events. The Vice President moves into the Presidents role after a year as Vice President. We are in need of a new secretary. The secretaries responsibilities include keeping minutes at meeting, sending out workshop information and reminders, and helping maintain accurate membership information and roster. The final position we are looking for is the hospitality chair. The hospitality chair coordinates volunteers to bring the delicious treats for the workshops. All board members are required to be national members of AOSA. If you are interested in becoming part of the local leadership please contact Kristine Mertens at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Our chapter share is coming up very soon on Saturday, February 7 and we are looking for volunteers to present!
Anyone is welcome to participate. A presentation can be just a few minutes or a longer lesson and can relate to any of a variety of topics, for example: Choral Pieces or Canons, The Volumes, Process, Recorder, Dance, Creative Movement, Improvisation (Instrument, Vocal, or Body Percussion), Literature or Poetry, Technology, Multicultural Music, etc.
We encourage everyone to consider presenting whether it is your first year of Orff or your thirty first:-) If you have any questions at all or would like to participate please contact our Vice President, Andrea, at email@example.com. Let her know what you will be sharing and how long your presentation will be, as well as any additional information we should know.

The lack of light did not dim the enjoyment of our Saturday workshop with Sarah Guterman. Under the shared workshop tab there is a list of all of the folk dances that Sarah taught during the the Orff Moment with source information or a description of the dance if it is not published. We look forward to seeing everyone in October for Vicki Derybowski’s presentation on English language learners.

This is our Chapter Share when we share lessons and other teaching ideas that we think might help others. Some of what is already planned for the chapter share are a lesson with children’s literature, how one district is handing assessment, and a guide to common core that you are probably already doing in your lessons. We could use a few more chapter members to share and, as we announced earlier this year, all people who share get a $5 Starbucks giftcard! Come to the workshop for some ideas to finish off our year and some social time too!
See you there!
This coming Saturday is our April workshop and we are excited to welcome Sue Keeble as our chapter presenter this month. Sue will be bringing how to adapt Mande drumming for kids!. Please bring a drum if you have one, although we are bringing extras.
